One of my favorite things about being a photographer is documenting the sweet relationships between a mother and her child. So, in honor of Mother’s Day, I created a slideshow of just that. <3

It was late summer in 2011 and I decided I wanted to do a photo session of just me Brayden. He’s my only child and we have a pretty special relationship. My husband works nights and so all week long I’m basically a single mom. And he’s my little buddy. We do homework together. We go on mid-week dates. We snuggle. (Yes, he’s almost 8 and still asks me to snuggle!) We have a relationship I want to remember. So I scheduled a session with my dear friend, Jaime Smith of Couture Weddings & Jaime Smith Photography. My mom, Brayden and I headed up to Jacksonville for our session (I wanted to surprise Shawn with these and luckily the date fell on a day he would be out of town for a bike race). Now, Brayden was a little wild man that day, so it wasn’t the calmest of sessions (see??? it happens to everyone!!) but I knew we got some great shots. When she sent me the gallery, I was in love!! I mean, doesn’t every mother have a special connection with her child? And Jaime captured that! And if you have multiple children, you have a unique bond with each of them. I think that is so important to capture!
Ever since then, I have encouraged parents to take individual pictures with their children. Even a session just devoted to them… So I decided to create these unique mini-sessions specifically designed for mothers and their children. And after looking for “that perfect place,” I think I have found it. It’s magical. It’s peaceful. It’s somewhat enchanted, even. A little hidden gem in the middle of town… in the middle of the hustle and bustle of Gainesville. Isn’t that just like our relationships with our children? Think about the days when you are going crazy, there is too much laundry, someone spills their juice, and the phone is ringing all the at the same time. And then that sweet face looks at you and smiles. And all is well. That’s the connection I want to capture for you. The one you want to remember when you look at the images 25 years from now. The images that your child will share with their children.
There will be two days of minis — Friday, April 5th and Saturday, April 6th at 5:00, 5:40, 6:20 and 7:00pm. (Early April so your orders will be ready by Mother’s Day!) Sessions are first come, first serve and can be held by paying in full or by paying a $100 deposit (and the remainder due at time of session). Ahh, spring, my favorite season! And with it comes the gorgeous wildflowers that line the roads and fill the fields! Wildflower sessions are one of my favorite sessions because they are so organic and are really the perfect setting for so many different types of session… children, family, maternity, etc. This year, there will be two days of minis — Friday, April 12th and Saturday, April 13th at 5:00, 5:40, 6:20 and 7:00pm. Sessions are first come, first serve and can be held by paying in full or by paying a $100 deposit (and the remainder due at time of session). I just got the sweetest text from one of my Baby Planners! She said, “Thanks for an awesome job with the girls. U r soooo patient!” I am so happy she thought I did an awesome job, but the comment about being patient is very important to me. Every mom wants her child to behave and cooperate during day-to-day events, but we tend to REALLY stress over it during something like a photo session! We want them to follow directions, be polite and cheerful, basically do exactly as they’re told so we get the “perfect picture” of them.
Now, I am a patient person in general, with or without a camera in front of me. However, we’ve been in front of the camera with our son a number of times and it’s hard to keep your cool!! I want him to behave not just for the pictures but for the photographer’s sake. I totally get how you, as the client, feel. TOTALLY!!! I’ve been blessed to work with a number of awesome photographers who have been so patient with us. It makes a world of difference and really puts you at ease knowing that your son’s wiggles are driving them nuts. So I’m happy to hear from several of my clients that they think I’m so patient. With that said… there is a reason behind my patience…
Is there such thing as the “perfect picture?” Absolutely. And it might not even be the one you’re thinking. You see, I think kids are perfect. Perfect in their own little way. It’s the little imperfections that make them perfect and unique. That’s my favorite part about my job… capturing who your little guy is at 18 months, why your 3 year old insists on wearing her tutu in the family picture, and how cute that bottom lip really is when it’s sticking out! Don’t get me wrong. I understand that many times the goal is to get a variety of shots, including one with the whole family smiling and looking at the camera. I want that for my walls too! But the shots you get before and after that shot end up being my favorite. So moms and dads… cut yourself some slack and let your kids be who they are. They are only kids once and they change a little every single day. So embrace it… their quirks, their habits and their perfect little imperfections. You’ll look back years from now and remember who they were. And you’ll smile. And you might even tear up thinking how it just seemed like yesterday.

Love the candid looks in this shoot! Keep up the great work!
